Looking for ways to beat the heat this summer? As always, the Art Center is a great place to go. Here’s a list of what’s coming up:
June 24, Thursday, 7 p.m. – Artist Talk with Dale Threlkeld
July 1, Thursday, 7 p.m. – Artist Talk with Don Bevirt
July 24, Saturday, 1 – 4 p.m. – Instant Exhibit Family Day – BYOU
In preparation for our Ubjects III exhibition in August, the Schmidt invites you to “bring your own ubject”! Participants will learn about how museums work as they learn to document, record, label, and display their own ubject in an ephemeral exhibit that will take place from 3:30 – 4 p.m. Informal discussions about how we come to value objects will help participants see the significance these objects have in our lives. Participants will take home their ubjects and a photograph of their ubject on display at the Schmidt. Open to the public at no charge.
Home Grown Film Festival – featuring the films of east side filmmakers. August 6, August 13, and August 27, Fridays, from 7 p.m. until the movies are over.
August 6 – An outdoor family film on the lawn. Sam Steele and the Junior Detective Agency. Produced by Judee and Rich Sauget of the Gateway Grizzlies fame. From 7 p.m. until dark when the movie starts, families can participate in detective games and hands-on art activities. Depending upon shooting schedules, the young actor Jacob Hayes may make an appearance.
August 13 – An outdoor movie will feature the film Free Dirt, by SWIC public information and marketing writer, Jim Klenn. To get off the couch and back into the good graces of his wife (and back in their bed), Jerry the cheapskate only has to do one simple thing – find some free dirt. There is a possibility of a concert following the movie featuring the band(s) whose music is in the film.
August 27 – This film will take place inside the Schmidt and feature the short films by area filmmakers selected by SWIC filmmaking instructor, Dan Cross.
August 26, Thursday, 6 – 8 p.m. – Ubjects III exhibition opening reception. Featuring the paintings of East St. Louis artist, Abraham Lincoln Walker.
Creative Kids Art Classes, every Saturday (unless otherwise noted) 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
After a brief tour of the exhibits, children and their adults are invited to create art related to the current exhibits. $1/person. Walk-ins welcome, registration is encouraged.
