Former SWIC Student Awarded Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship

One of our very own, Jill Downen, was recently awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for 2010. Bruno David Gallery, her affiliated gallery, sent out the news:

Bruno David Gallery is proud to announce that two of our affiliated artists, Jill Downen and Van McElwee, have each been awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2010). The Foundation has awarded 180 Fellowships to artists, scientists, and scholars. The successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants. Jill Downen and Van McElwee both live in and work in St. Louis, and have shown their recent work at the gallery.

It is remarkable that out of 180 Fellowships awarded, two artists were selected from St. Louis, and even more remarkably from the same gallery– the Bruno David Gallery!

What a great day for St. Louis and for all hard working artists in the metro area!

Indeed! While finishing high school in Belleville, Jill took art classes at SWIC under the instruction of art professor Doug Eskra. The College/Foundation collection has a painting she made during this time.

Jill’s other great accomplishments can be read at Bruno David Gallery website and her own website. Congrats to Jill!
